There are many good and helpful Bible reading plans out there. Some work chronologically through the Bible, others include a reading from the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Psalms daily. The similarity in almost all plans, however, is that they take 12 months to work through the entire Bible.
For many, this is a great place to start—especially for those who are new to the Scriptures or who have never worked through the entire Bible yet—and for others a great baseline to maintain. There are also times in life—mothers with young children for example—where striving to get a few verses a day, maybe even per week is all you can find time for in a particular season of extreme giving of yourself.
However, for some of us, if we were honest, we could read the Bible more than once a year.
Most audio Bibles are less than 80 hours, roughly indicating the length of time it takes to read the entire Bible. In the average American home, if the television were turned off and replaced with Bible reading, the entire Bible could be read in 16 days (5 hours a day)! Thats reading the Bible over 20 times a year!
Now, in the “average” American home, the Bible is not prized much less read, but the point remains. For those of us whose daily bread is the Word of God, there are certainly other things we could eliminate and replace with more profitable, eternal things.
To that end, here is a plan that works through the Bible four times: 4x Year Reading Plan. Often with Bible-reading we can feel guilty for falling short. If you have not read the Bible through once, do not start with this 4x plan. This is not to promote legalism, rituals, or duty, but is simply a tool to drive some to an intentionality that seeks to carve out time to delight in God’s Word. (The beauty of the plan also is that, if you do fall short, you will probably still read the Bible more than once a year).
Try picking four translations of the Bible you have not read—they all have strengths and weaknesses so its good to try others—or three versions plus an audio Bible to help you achieve your goal. Some versions read a lot smoother and are good for reading large chunks of the Bible. Also, encourage a friend, spouse, or a group to do this with you to help keep each other on track.
“The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
the testimony of the Lord is sure, making wise the simple;
the precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;
the commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes;
the fear of the Lord is clean, enduring forever;
the rules of the Lord are true, and righteous altogether.
More to be desired are they than gold, even much fine gold;
sweeter also than honey and drippings of the honeycomb.
